Computed Tomography (CT Scan)

Computed Tomography (CT or “CAT” scan) uses a combination of x-rays and computerized reconstruction to produce images of the body in much greater detail than standard x-rays. All areas of the body can be evaluated with CT.

San Diego Imaging has state-of-the-art CT scanners at both its Kearny Mesa and Chula Vista imaging centers, with multidetector technology that allows extremely fast scanning, thin slices for better resolution, and evaluation of blood vessels with CT angiography

Typically, a CT scan is performed quickly, with most of the time used for preparation. Actual scan time only lasts a few seconds. The patient lies flat on a table which moves through the large, donut-shaped opening of the scanner as the study is performed. Our technologists are always in constant communication during the exam.

Contrast material is sometimes given intravenously to better define internal structures. Although safe, this material contains iodine, and patients with iodine allergies and previous reactions to CT contrast material should consider MRI instead if contrast is needed. Similarly, patients with renal insufficiency or failure should also avoid CT contrast material and should consider MRI.

GE LightSpeed 64 Slice CT in Kearny Mesa

Our Kearny Mesa imaging center has the brand new LightSpeed VCT. This is the world’s first and fastest volume CT system. It can scan an organ in one second and capture a whole body image in ten seconds. This is more than twice as fast as the prior multi-slice CT scanners. This speed is especially helpful in shortening breath holds for geriatric and pediatric patients – and helps to deliver outstanding image quality and clear, highly detailed images.

In addition to performing all traditional exams for oncology, neurology, and musculoskeletal applications, this scanner captures images of a beating heart in five heartbeats. In less than 7 seconds, this scanner can produce clear, highly detailed images of the heart, coronary arteries, cerebrovascular system, and peripheral arteries..

Philips Brilliance CT 10-Slice in Chula Vista

This Philips’ Brilliance CT 10-slice configuration is the fastest and newest CT scanner in this South Bay. This system enables a wide range of routine and advanced procedures, including gated cardiac studies, functional CT and submillimeter isotropic neuro and orthopedic imaging.

Also, DoseRightTM offers both prospective and dynamic exposure controls to ensure lowest dose with constant image quality.
